Leahy cheers normalization of relations with Cuba
Patrick Leahy applauded President Barack Obama’s announcement Wednesday that the U.S. will restore diplomatic relations with Cuba. Leahy, D-Vt., who has long been active in pursuing the normalization of relations between the U.S. and the Communist island, returned Monday from a trip to Havana, where he discussed that possibility with Cuban leaders.

UVM Medical Center nurses share staffing concerns
The president of the nurses’ union at the University of Vermont Medical Center took her concerns over staffing to the hospital’s board of trustees Thursday. Laurie Aunchman, interim president of the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, addressed the trustees as they entered the final three days of negotiations for the new nursing contract at UVMMC.

Controversial ties: Progressives, city officials examine ethics in election
As election day nears, conflicts between political rights and campaign ethics need to be considered, Progressive city councilors and city officials said. Senior Carmen Scoles and junior Brock Gibian are running as Democrats for Burlington City Council. Scoles is running for the East District, which encompasses Ward 1 and 8, against current Ward 1 city councilor Selene Colburn.

Burlington’s Development Review Board got an early look at plans for the second phase of development proposed on lakefront property occupied by Burlington College. Developer Eric Farrell presented sketch plans for renovation of the former orphanage at the North Avenue site to the board Tuesday night.

Ban on legal settlement funding triggers debate
Starting next month, no one in Vermont may offer or enter into a consumer-litigation loan contract for at least a year. S.73, which governs consumer protection laws and was passed by the Legislature last month, calls for a one-year moratorium on all consumer litigation funding contracts.

Housing advocates question method of annual homeless count
Vermont’s annual homeless population count, required by the federal government, is not seen as the best method for collecting homeless population numbers, advocates say. Department of Housing and Urban Development holds a yearly census through state agencies across the country to measure the national homeless population on a particular night, usually in January, said Rhonda Siciliano, public affairs specialist at the Boston regional office of HUD.

[Update – April 29, 4:28 p.m.: On April 29, Cindy Smith was fired from her job at Cook Commons. She was told it was because she got too many “points” from absences and from “insubordination.”] Cindy Smith sat across from a Sodexo human resources representative and cried. It was April 19, 17 days after Smith was told she would have a meeting with UVM Sodexo management to see if — and when — she could come back to work.

Shumlin signs water quality bill by the waterfront
Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a bill that aims to improve the quality of the state’s waterways Tuesday on the shore of Lake Champlain. The bill, H.35, raises money through a 0.2 percent surcharge on the state’s property transfer tax, which will only come into effect for properties sold for more than $200,000.

Possible law school ‘merger’
A house representative resigned from the UVM board of trustees March 2014 due to a “conflict of interest” with Vermont Law School work group. A Vermont Law School work group was created within the board of trustees in January 2014 but was dissolved in June 2014 because they had “concluded their work,” said Corrine Thompson, trustee coordinator at UVM.

Out-of-state, out of mind
Maine-native Sierra Connell is attending her second semester at UVM. She’s at her “number one school.”. She’s volunteering, playing flute in concert band, spending her nights going to music events and hanging out with friends. Before she could graduate high school, her father passed away and her mother became too injured to work.

Vermont colleges receive $17.8 million for biomedical research
A $17.8 million grant was awarded Friday to further biomedical research and education for all of Vermont’s colleges. The National Institute of Health's grant is third to be awarded to the Vermont Genetics Network, which is based at the University of Vermont and serves UVM, the state college system, St.

No smoking on Church Street
A smoking ban approved by the Burlington City Council on four blocks of Church Street. The Burlington City Council met Nov. 10 to vote on the ban, which was passed 11 to 3, according to City Council members. Bianka Legrand of Ward 7 was in favor of the ban. The smoking ban will help families with small children feel more welcome on Church Street, she said.

I am a junior at the University of Vermont planning on pursuing a career in journalism. I am currently an intern at the VT Digger and have published several stories for the online news source. I have been on my college paper, The Vermont Cynic, in the News section since I began attending the University of Vermont in the fall of 2013. The Vermont Cynic is the longest running weekly college newspaper in the country and has won many awards over the years.

I currently hold the positions of Assistant News Editor, Senior Staff Writer, Enterprise Writer, Sports Staff Writer and Staff Photographer at the Cynic. I have acquired many skills through my work on the Vermont Cynic. If you look at my resume- the icon that looks like a document beneath my profile picture- you will see the various skills I have acquired in these positions as well as the skills I learned through the online internship positions I have held.

My major is English, because there is no journalism major offered at the University of Vermont. My minors are Public Communication and Philosophy.

I am also a member of the NCAA Division 1 swimming and diving team at Vermont. I have been swimming competitively year round since I was nine. My commitments to the sport of swimming and to my college newspaper have helped me learn how to manage my time wisely, work well with other people and persevere.
